National Capital Commission

HORTICULTURAL TECHNICIAN

The Capital Stewardship Branch is looking for a Horticultural Technician for an indeterminate position. The position is classified as a RÉ-03 ($50,375 to $63,754 per annum; 2021 rate of pay under review).  

A list of qualified people will be compiled and may be used for additional temporary or indeterminate positions.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field or High school diploma with an acceptable combination of specific, short-term, or practical training related to the position through apprenticeship programs, colleges, or red seal certifications.


CERTIFICATES / LICENSES

  • Valid driver’s licence (Québec residents will be required to pass Class 3 for heavy vehicles).


EXPERIENCE

One (1) to three (3) years of experience with:

  • Horticultural best practices, tree care, Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM), different garden design styles, vegetable gardens, tropical plants and floral design;
  • Specialized equipment and techniques (handheld tools, tractors, mowers, aerators, sprayers, etc.)


KNOWLEDGE

  • Of work-related safety standards and work procedures and practices;
  • Of natural plant health care techniques, including monitoring disease and pest control;
  • Of specific pruning and maintenance requirements of various types of roses, shrubs, trees, hedges, vines and tropical plants.    


ABILITIES

  • To work alone or in teams with minimal supervision;
  • To provide guidance to students and interns;
  • To communicate effectively and to respond to general inquiries.    


COMPETENCIES

ASSETS

  • Pesticide applicator’s licence;
  • Chainsaw safety training and certification;
  • Tractor / excavating / chipper training and certification;
  • Forklift operator training and certification;
  • Valid Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certificate;
  • Experience working in greenhouses;
  • Experience with snow and ice control materials;
  • Experience with event logistics.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Will be expected to work occasionally overtime and some weekends;
  • Will be on a standby rotation after working hours and may be called back to work.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Possess or eligible to obtain Secret security clearance;
  • Linguistic profile: English Essential or French Essential;
  • Position is in the National Capital Region. The person selected for this position must reside within a commutable distance from the workplace at 1 Sussex Drive (Rideau Hall), Ottawa, Ontario;
  • The person selected for this position is expected to always work on site.
